 İngilizce’de RAĞMEN konusu:
İngilizce’de ‘’rağmen’’ anlamına gelen 4 kalıp vardır.
although /o:l # ou/ olmasına rağmen
even though /i:vın # ou/ olmasına rağmen
despite /dispayt/ rağmen
in spite of /in sıpayt ıv/ rağmen
*Bu kalıplar cümlenin başında kullanılırsa ikinci cümlecikten önce virgül getirilir. Eğer cümleciklerin ortasında kullanılırsa virgül getirilmez.
Bu kalıpları kullanırken dikkat edeceğimiz en önemli özellik;
’Despite’’ ve ‘’In spite of’’dan sonra bir isim gelir ya da fiil gelirse ‘’-ing’’ takısı alır, unutmayalım. Bu iki kalıptan sonra cümle gelmez.
Örneğin:
1. Despite the rain, (Yağmura rağmen,)
In spite of the rain,
2. Despite the cold, (Soğuğa rağmen,)
In spite of the cold,
3. Despite having a car, (Bir arabaya sahip olmasına rağmen,)
In spite of having a car,
4. Despite being tired, (Yorgun olmasına rağmen,)
In spite of being tired.
5. Despite this, (Buna rağmen,)
In spite of this,
‘’despite’’ ve ‘’in spite of’’ ikiside rağmen demektir ve birbirinin yerlerine kullanılabilirler, anlamda bir değişiklik yaratmaz.
- Despite the rain, we went out.
- In spite of the rain, we went out.
- We went out despite the rain.
- We went out in spite of the rain.
Örnekler:
1. Despite the cold, we swam in the river yesterday. (Soğuğa rağmen, dün nehirde yüzdük.)
2. I wasn’t well, but in spite of this I continued working. (İyi değildim ama buna rağmen çalışmaya devam ettim.)
3. We went on a picnic despite the bad weather. (Kötü havaya rağmen pikniğe gittik.)
4. We decided to go to the cinema in spite of being tired. (Yorgun olmamıza rağmen sinemaya gitmeye karar verdik.)
5. Despite having a headache, I enjoyed the film. (Başımın ağrısına rağmen, filmden zevk aldım.)
Örnekler:
-. Despite having studied, I couldn’t pass the exam. (Çalışmama rağmen sınavdan geçemedim.)
-. In spite of having had dinner, I felt so hungry. (Akşam yemeği yememe rağmen, kendimi çok aç hissettim.)
-. Despite having finished our homework, my mother didn’t let us go out. (Ödevimizi bitirmiş olmamıza rağmen, annem dışarı çıkmamıza izin vermedi.)
-. Tom didn’t want to come with us in spite of having tried to convince him. ( Tom’u ikna etmeye çalışmış olmamıza rağmen bizimle gelmek istemedi.)
 Normalde ‘’despite’’ ve ‘’in spite of’’ dan sonra bir cümle gelmez ama bu kalıpların arkasından ‘’tha fact that’’ ekleyerek cümle getirebiliriz.

- Despite the fact that the weather is bad, I like London.
- In spite of the fact that the weather is bad, I like London.
- I like London despite of the fact that the weather is bad.
- I like London in spite of the fact that the weather is bad.
- She went to London despite / in spite of the fact that her doctor had told her to have a rest. (Doktoru ona dinlenmesini söylemiş olmasına rağmen Londra’ya gitti.)
- Mia loved her husband despite / in spite of the fact that he drank too much. (Kocasının çok içmesine rağmen Mia kocasını sevdi.)
- Despite / In spite of the fact that they lost the match, they celebrated. (Maçı kaybetmelerine rağmen, kutlama yaptılar.)
- In spite of / Despite the fact that in rained, we went out. (Yağmurun yağmasına rağmen dışarı çıktık.)
 Although , Even though ve though
‘’Although’’ , ‘’even though’’ ve ‘’though’’ kalıpları iki cümleyi birbirine bağlar ve -masına rağmen, anlamı verir. Burada dikkat etmemiz gereken birbirine bağlananların her ikisininde cümle oluşudur. Even though cümleye daha güçlü bir rağmen anlamı katar. Konuşmacı burada şaşkınlığını dile getirmek için even though kalıbını although’a tercih edebilir. Though’ un kullanımı biraz farklıdır. Though başka bir cümlenin ardından gelen 2. cümlenin sonunda kullanılır. Cümlenin başında kullanılmaz.
Although, even though ve though kalıpları cümleye aynı anlamı verdiği için birbirlerinin yerine kullanılabilirler.

1. Although it was raining.
Even though it was raining. Yağmur yağıyor olmasına rağmen.
…… . It was raining though.
2. Even though I was tired, I couldn’t sleep.
Although I was tired, I couldn’t sleep. Yorgun olmama rağmen, uyuyamadım.
I was tired. I couldn’t sleep though.
3. The house was very nice. I don’t like the garden though. (Ev çok güzeldi. Buna rağmen bahçesini beğenmedim.)
4. I passed the exam although I didn’t study. (Hiç çalışmamama rağmen sınavdan geçtim.)
5. Even though the phone was very expensive, I bought it. (Telefon çok pahalı olmasına rağmen satın aldım.)
6. He smiled even though he lost the game. (Oyunu kaybetmesine rağmen gülümsedi.)
7. Although she is beautiful, she hasn’t got a boyfriend. (Çok güzel olmasına rağmen, bir erkek arkadaşı yok.)
8. I went to the party. I was ill though. (Hasta olmama rağmen partiye gittim.)
9. Although it rained, we went out. (Yağmur yağmasına rağmen dışarı çıktık.)
10. Even though it rained all day, we enjoyed the party. (Tüm gün yağmur yağmasına rağmen, partiden çok zevk aldık.)
